Book review : What Shall I Make?

I have got "What Shall I make?" story book for Medha from the library. Here is our review on this book.

Author :  Nandini Nayar
Publisher : Tulika Publisher

Story?

Neeraj loves to help out when his mom is cooking his favorite snack: hot, light, puffy chapati. And today she’s given him a bit of dough. What should he make with it?

A snake?
A cat?
A mouse?

But what if one of these shapes come to life? Neeraj wonders. “Roll it up, quick!” says his mother. And he does.

This is a playful story about imagination and the satisfaction that comes from creating something in the kitchen.

What young children will like?

One thing I like about Tulika books is that they are not preachy. Simple stories with lot of room for interpretation and imagination.
  • My 2-year-8 months-old jumped right into the adventure of imagination with Neeraj, and then mimicked his dough creations when we played with play-dough.
  • Nandini Nayar’s text is easy to understand.
  • There is a pattern to Neeraj sculpting an animal with the dough, imagining trouble, and his mother calling “Roll it up, quick, quick!”  This repetition of text encourages the young reader to make predictions and to be able to “read” (tell) the story easily.
  • The bright uncluttered illustrations focus on Neeraj and the key ingredients to his adventure – the dough, rolling pin and board, and the tava.  Proiti Roy shows only a fraction of his mother’s clothing, but she is there, encouraging Neeraj and keeping him safe.
  • After we read the book, we brought the play dough from our storage box and my little one made several creatures as mentioned in the book.

Medha liked it ?

  • She loved the pictures a lot, Each and every picture of dough creations especially CAT.
  • She loves the way how Neeraj rolling the dough without holding rolling pin.
  • She was keep on asking to show her Neeraj's mother?? :P In the book, they shows only her saree.

My Rating

Though they mentioned recommended age is 3+, I recommend this book to read to kids from 1.5-2+ too as this book is great to introduce play dough creations and imagination.

5/5
