Book review : Thumb Thumb Series - Tulika’s Thumbprint Books

Today we are reviewing the Thumb Thumb series – Tulika’s Thumbprint Books. Just about 10 pages each, about the size of a 5x7 photo album, in paperback, packed with wonder.

There is no discounting the appeal of simplicity and playfulness in reading to kids. Thumbprint makes up the art work, and a few simple sentences makes up the story, such as it is. Each book affirms 'I can read this book' at the end which is empowering for beginner readers.

‘How do I help my child begin reading independently?’ is a question I am asked quite often. I always recommend Tulika’s Thumb Thumb books. What makes these books ideal for beginner? Well, each book has a simple engaging story, sometimes with a twist at the end.

In ‘Where is Thangi’, Thambi goes around asking where Thangi is? All the while, Thangi is right behind him, trying to suppress a giggle. Just like the little one turning the pages!

The colours are bright and the pages uncluttered. Small in size, low in word count, they are not intimidating in the least. Which is important when it comes to little ones taking tentative steps to reading by themselves. The last page has the affirmation ‘I CAN READ THIS BOOK!’ – a cue for young readers to celebrate their success.

The series has illustrations created with thumbprints! At the end of the book, the reader is invited to draw a picture with his/her own thumbprint.

There are ten books in all. It is tough to pick favourites, they are all so cute! But one doesn’t have to pick favorites, considering each book costs only forty five rupees. What? You are still here? Go on, buy a few. You will not regret it, I assure you.
