Road Transportation Theme - Day 1 - Thematic Learning

~Medha is 3 years 1 month old~

We have completed our first theme SUMMER successfully. I must mention that our second theme FARM is not that hit. Not sure of reasons, though Medha loves animals for some reasons, she didn't like this theme much. Guess, I should think of more interesting crafts and activities for this theme. As she didn't like this, I thought I will pause this theme for a while and proceed with a new one and come back to this after a while.

This time, I asked her which theme you wanted to pick? My options for her are " In the Kitchen" and "Transportation/Things that go". I guessed she may pick Kitchen but to my surprise, she chose Transportation.

So, here is our Day #1 of Transportation Theme. Mainly about Road Transportation.

Here is what we did?

Make Car with Cardboard

  • We took an old empty carton box and cut a piece of it. And drew semi circle and cut through the shape drawn.
  • Medha colored it using some crayons. She want her car to be more colorful so it's combination of some colors.
  • We took some color cardboard and punched two holes for wheels. And then glued to the above cut shape.
Tadaaa... Our car is ready..  :)

Art-O-Wheels craft

I bought Art-O-Wheels craft box sometime back. I felt that's perfect for this theme as it's something related to wheels craft, hence I took the box out to do the craft.

Kit

Kit comes with the four monster cutouts, that kid need to draw their own patterns and then paint with the colors and brush included. And then fix the wheels given to the cutout using screws and bolts.

Contents of the kit
I drew the patterns on a card and by seeing it, she wanted to do. Hence she drew few shapes on the cutout and then started painting with the colors as given for one of the sample picture given on the instructions sheet. And then I spoke about wheels and shaft. She inserted wheels in the shaft and inserted in the cutout.

Final Picture
She colored other cutouts also, but she didn't drew any patterns. She just colored them in her own way. And then she loved talking about wheels and tires. We also spoke about Flat Tyre (Puncture etc.). She recollected when she saw a flat tire first time. She saw it in our parking lobby and asked me why the tire was flat where as ours is round. That was the first time I spoke about flat tire and puncture and pumping air into tires etc.

Bus Spray Painting

I prepared this special activity for Medha. She loved it and although it was messy it was well worth it.

  • Simply draw a giant version of a bus.
  • I drew BUS and she drew CAR other side.

  • Prepare some water-thinned washable tempera paint and put it in a spray bottle. I used Colin Empty bottle. And I realized we don't have water thinned paint at home now, so we mixed little water in the normal paint and poured in the bottle.

  • Tape the drawing to a wall that can be hosed down.

  • And give the spray bottle to kid and let the fun begin!! Actually as it's normal paint, sprayed paint is not so visible in the picture. Its more like watery!!
  • After an hour of spraying, Medha felt bored and got the brush and colored it.
