Book Review: The Snow King's daughter

I have bought "The Snow King's daughter" story book in the last week for Medha along with The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Here is my review on this book.

Author : Sowmya Rajendran

Story?

The snow king's daughter is the story of a little boy, Keshav, he has his summer vacations and his favorite past time is looking at the atlas and pretend travelling to various places and make up a language for each place. This book very subtly talks about Tibet, immigration and independence. The illustrations are simple and fun.

What young children will learn?

  • Childhood sense of wonder at discovering new places

Medha liked it ?

  • I was especially moved by the illustration on the page where baby Lobsang and her sister bid farewell to their parents, in order to come to India, leaving their parents to stay back in Tibet and fight for Tibet. The picture was powerful, adding a new dimension, making a compounded impact on me.
  • When she asked, "But Lobsang is just a baby. How can she go away with strangers?", I realized that it made the same impact on her too.
  • It hasn't been easy explaining Medha why the kids came to India but their parents stayed back. Every time we read the book she has a question, why did they let the babies go? When would they meet their parents? Who actually looked after them? and so on. It is very rarely pulled out for reading story. She is more interested to watch SNOW pictures and parents waving good bye to kids picture.

My Rating (as per Medha's interest)

3.5/5
